Prejudice A Weed in the Workplace - 792 Words
Prejudice in the Workplace Prejudice is a paralyzing, disabling social ill. Prejudice is the one human characteristic that retards the development of society, it is a crippling behavior that impedes human advancement and is harmful to society as a whole. Prejudice is more often than not a negative sentiment and in the workplace is particularly harmful; it can lead to extreme mental and emotionally anguish. (Ferguson, Prejudice, Stereotyping, and Discrimination). It is harmful to productivity, and creates an environment that is hostile and creates breeding ground for harassment. This paper will explore prejudice in the workplace, the harmful effects as well as provide solutions on how to reduce prejudice in a work environment. The workplace is a melting pot of people from various backgrounds with various beliefs, co-workers dont choose each other, but rather they are placed in an environment together and expected to play nice. The workplace is, unfortunately, a breeding ground for prejudice of all forms, as individuals dont always leave their thoughts and belief systems at the front door when outside of company walls (Ehrlich, Pincus, Race and Ethnic Conflict: Contending Views on Prejudice, Discrimination and Ethnoviolence).
